Project Overview
Challenges & Solutions
One of the biggest challenges was the existing wiring itself. The property still featured old cotton-insulated wiring, which had become brittle and unsafe. These types of cables degrade over time, especially in Brisbane’s warm climate, and can pose a serious fire risk. Additionally, power outlets and switches throughout the house were single circuits, meaning they were more prone to overloading when running multiple devices simultaneously.
Access was another major hurdle. The home had limited roof cavity space and tightly packed wall insulation, making it difficult to remove and replace old wiring without damaging the interior. To overcome this, we used precision tools and flexible fish tape systems that allowed us to carefully guide new cabling through tight spaces with minimal wall cutting. Where necessary, wall plates were removed and patched seamlessly after installation.
We also discovered that the home’s original switchboard had no RCD (safety switch) protection and was running on an outdated fuse system. This meant that even a minor electrical fault could have gone undetected, putting the occupants at risk. We upgraded the board to a modern, RCD-protected system with clear circuit labeling, isolators, and spare capacity for future electrical needs like solar panels or EV chargers.
To further future-proof the home, we installed additional dedicated circuits in the kitchen and garage to support high-demand appliances such as an induction cooktop, dishwasher, and electric vehicle charging point. These circuits were strategically planned to reduce overload risk and improve the overall stability of the electrical system. This forward-thinking approach ensures the home is ready for future technology upgrades without requiring major electrical work down the track.
The rewiring process also gave us the opportunity to install surge protection within the main switchboard. With Brisbane’s frequent storms and occasional power surges, this layer of protection adds a significant safety and longevity benefit to the household’s electronics and appliances. This small but powerful upgrade helps protect everything from computers and TVs to fridges and washing machines.
As part of the finishing touches, we walked the client through the new switchboard layout and demonstrated how to safely reset RCDs and identify circuit labels. We also provided a tailored electrical maintenance guide, outlining best practices for safe appliance use, load management, and when to schedule a professional inspection. Our commitment didn’t end with installation—we ensured the client felt confident in using and maintaining their new system.
Post-Installation Impact
Following the completion of the rewiring and switchboard upgrade, the homeowner reported an immediate improvement in the performance and reliability of their electrical system. Power points and lighting operated without flickering, breakers no longer tripped under load, and the family was able to run multiple appliances simultaneously without issue. This stability offered not just convenience, but confidence in the overall safety of their home.
Energy efficiency gains were also quickly noticed. The transition to LED lighting, along with isolated lighting circuits and modern appliances, led to a measurable reduction in the household’s monthly electricity usage. After three months, the client reported an average drop of 18% in energy consumption compared to the previous quarter—a meaningful improvement for both their wallet and the environment.
Additionally, the homeowner appreciated the added value and marketability the upgraded electrical system brought to the property. In today’s competitive real estate market, homes with modern, compliant, and energy-efficient electrical systems stand out. Should they ever decide to sell, this investment has positioned the property as a safer and more desirable option for future buyers.
